Phoenix Project #1901
This project required a total of 10 permanent ground anchors (“GAs”) to support an existing abutment as part of the Chelsea Viaduct rehabilitation project.
Prior to the start of production work, Phoenix’s project team analyzed the original design and ground conditions. Due to the presence of fill behind the existing abutment, Phoenix proposed additional tiebacks at a reduced load to ensure the abutment could be safely supported. The project’s geotechnical engineer (HNTB) was receptive to this approach, which led to a successful and collaborative effort.
All of the GAs were installed in limited headroom due to the presence of the existing overhead viaduct structure. Phoenix researched multiple pieces of equipment and work platforms that would fit in the existing constraints.
Phoenix maintained safe work areas while also not impacting or interrupting the adjacent parking lots and overhead bridge structure. The use of multiple pumps, hoses, and recirculation tanks allowed Phoenix to control spoils and keep them from impacting the surrounding areas. The project’s site contractor did a great job helping to contain and dispose of the drill spoils to keep the operation running safety and smoothly.
In the end, all anchors were installed, tested, locked-off, and incorporated into the finished structure.
