PROJECT OVERVIEW
Phoenix Project #2018
This project called for 9 drilled micropiles (“DMPs”) to be installed to support new foundations at the MCH Assembly Row Imaging Clinic project in Somerville, MA.
Before construction began, a geotechnical investigation discovered that the site was comprised of filled land, historically used for multiple industrial and commercial purposes. A portion of the building was supported by a combined foundation system that included precast piles for column loads and partially grouted ground improvement elements that supported floor slabs.
Regarding the construction site, Phoenix worked inside the building with limited headroom and access. This required that a small drill rig be used to ensure there was enough clearance for construction to take place.
The micropiles themselves had an allowable capacity of 100 kips in compression. They were advanced through all overburden soils and socketed uncased 40 feet into the underlying natural sand and clay deposit. Each pile was advanced to the specified tip elevation, furnished and installed with the required pile reinforcement and neat cement grout.
Phoenix was able to install all micropiles successfully and safely, even with the condition of limited headroom while working indoors.
