Earth retention is required when proposed excavations cannot be safely sloped, or when they might otherwise pose a risk of movement to adjacent soil/structures. By retaining soil, excavation can proceed without jeopardizing the safe construction of proposed structures. Unstable slopes can be supported to prevent landslides, and existing foundations can be extended vertically using underpinning.
